1. The State Tretyakov Gallery is one of the world’s greatest museums.

2.    Thegallery consists entirely of Russian art.

3.    It is located in one of the oldest directs ofMoscow – Zamoskvorechye, not far from the Kremlin.

4.    In 1856 Pavel Tretyakov, a 24-year-old Moscow merchant bought 2 paintings, the core of a collection that was to develop into a famous public art gallery. 

5.    Those were the works by Khudyakov “An Accident with the Finnish Smugglers” and by Shilder “Temptation”.

 6.    The rapidly expanding collection included the finest canvases by Russian artists of different generations.

7.    Among them were such outstanding masters as Ilya Repin, Ivan Shishkin, Vasily Perov, Ivan Kramskoy, Vasily Surikov and others.

8.    An ardent admirer of Art, Tretyakov looked out for young talents, whom he was always ready to encourage.

9.    By the 1870s the collection already contained over 500 canvases which were kept in a special wing of the Tretyakov house inLavrushensky Lane.

10.  In 1881 the museum was opened to the public.

11.   In 1892, 6 years before his death Tretyakov presented his collection to the city ofMoscow.

12. It consisted of about 2 000 paintings, drawings and sculptures.

13. The donation included a collection of West European art left by Pavel Tretyakov’s younger brother Sergei who had died not long before.

14. The now existing facade of the museum was built in 1901-1902 .

15. It was designed by the painter Viktor Vasnetsov in a peculiar Russian fairy-tale style.

16. It has got original appearance and to this day remains one ofMoscow’s most attractive sights.

17. At the beginning of the 1980s the reconstruction of the premises of the gallery inLavrushensky Lane began.

18. The gallery was finally reopened to the public on the 5th of April 1994.

19.  It is one of the five best picture galleries in the world now.

20.The collection contains more than 130 000 works of painting, sculpture and graphics, created throughout the centuries by successive generations of Russian artists.

21. Russian art works, ranging in date from the 11th to the early 20th century, are on the show in Gallery’s historic building on Lavrushinskiy Pereulok.

22.The gallery has got many halls.

23.One of them is devoted to the great Russian painters of the 18th and 19th centuries.

24.One can find pictures by such painters as Serov, Repin, Ivanov and Levitan  there.

25.Other exhibition halls feature icons (most notably an impressive collection of icons by the artist Andrei Rublyov), 20th century Romantic, Symbolist and avant-garde canvases and displays of graphic and applied arts.

26.New building of the Tretyakov Gallery at Krymskiy Val houses a unique museum exhibition of national 20th century art.

27.A visit to the Tretyakov Gallery is a definite must for anyone interested in Russian art and culture.
